The Bamboo Tree

A young student came to his master, desperate. "I have been practicing for 2 years," he said. "I have been meditating, studying, working harder than anyone, but nothing has changed. I see no progress. I am ready to give up." The master took him outside to a small garden. He pointed to the ground. "Three years ago, I planted a bamboo seed right there. For an entire year, nothing. I watered it every single day. Nothing. Second year, I watered it again every single day. Still nothing. Not a single shoot. Not a single sign of life. Third year, then fourth year. People walked past and laughed at me, old man. Nothing is growing there. Give up, but I watered it anyway.

And then, in the 5th year, in a single season, the bamboo grew 90 ft tall." The student stared at the ground. "90 ft in one season?" The master nodded slowly. "Tell me, did it grow 90 feet in one season, or did it grow 90 feet in 5 years? For 4 years, that bamboo was building something nobody could see, roots so deep, so wide, so unshakable that when it finally moved, nothing could stop it. Your growth is the same. The days that feel empty, the years that feel wasted, the progress nobody can see, including you, it is not nothing. It is roots. The ancient teachers knew the most powerful forces in nature are the ones that take their time. Do not mistake silence for failure. Do not mistake patience for weakness. Everything that will last is still growing underground. Keep watering."
